Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan have valued the importance of including children’s literature in their teaching materials. In Singapore, such cases are rare. As a state
whereby Chinese Language is a second language, comparing Singapore with places where Chinese is the first language is not valid. Especially in the 21st Century, challenges are
faced due to wide use of multimedia, Chinese lessons must be more exciting and interesting than before. The value of children’s literature attracted the attention of many educators,
hence creating an opportunity of revival for Singapore’s Chinese children literature.
Currently, there are very few researches regarding Singapore’s Chinese children literature and her primary Chinese education. This study aims to facilitate understanding and provide
new perspective through the case study of Singapore’s Chinese children literature and primary Chinese education. Besides sorting the development stages of these two areas after
the founding of Singapore, this study suggest that Singapore’s Chinese children literature has to go through contention with primary Chinese education. Only by reducing its
difference with the aims and methodology of primary Chinese education, Singapore’s Chinese children literature will be able see revival in the context of Singapore. |
