Description
The Republic of China (ROC), since its re-establishment in Taiwan in 1949, could not represent the whole of China effectively. It claims sovereignty over Mainland China territory, but effective ROC jurisdiction only covers the area of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and other minor surrounding islands. As the founding political party of the ROC, the Kuomintang of China (KMT) has never abandon its mission in defending the ROC sovereignty, how is it to preserve a regime that represents all of China in the small island of Taiwan becomes a historical issue that the KMT has to deal with. However, from “One China”, to “Special State-to-State Relations”, to “One China with different interpretations”, to “One China, same interpretation”, we see that the KMT represents the ROC in different perspectives, the ROC is anything but a constant. This paper aims to use a semiotic analysis approach to study the political subjectivity of the “ROC” sign, in which we investigate how the KMT uses political discourse to reconstruct the political dynamics of the ROC, in responds to the issues of times, and Taiwanese aspirations for self-realisation and self-determination.
