Summary:The large energy demand of buildings has driven the need and justify the importance of energy conservation. Thermochromic smart windows intend to reduce the energy demand for the heating and cooling of the building interior to maintain indoor comfort. Vanadium (IV) dioxide stands as a suitable and the most commonly used material selection for thermochromic window coatings. However limitations such as a high transition temperature, a low luminous transmittance and a weak solar regulating efficiency makes pure VO2 unusable in practical applications. In this report, VO2 nanostructures including pristine and co-doped VO2 thin films are subjected to HCl etching to observe the effects. Experimental results shows an improvement in the luminous transmittance as well as the solar regulating efficiency. This suggests that the etching process can induce improvements in the thermochromic properties of VO2 thin films.
