“The Uniqueness of Malaysian Chinese Literature” was a turning point in the Malaysian Chinese literary field during the late 1940’s, where new trends of realist writings started among authors, highlighting a sense of locality within the context of Singapore and Malaya. Through the study of Singapore Chinese Literature writer Miao Xiu(Lu Shao Quan, 1920-1980) fictional works, this paper intends to explore the multi-perspective representation of realism in his writings. As a realist writer emerged in the 1950s, Miao Xiu’s realism writing was closely related with Modern Chinese literature, Singapore Chinese literature, as well the realism in the Western literature context. Other than examining Miao Xiu’s fictional works, the paper will gives an overview of realism in the literary context, so by integrating realism discourse and critical theories such as cultural-geography theory, subaltern studies and comparative literature theory by showing the representations of society and the literary view on British colonialism in the unique context in the 50s and 60s.Thus the paper reveals the possible breakthroughs and limits on how Miao Xiu’s Nanyang Realism can be portrayed in the cross-cultural context. |
