| Summary: | This paper contributes to the growing discussion of the preservation of hawker culture in Singapore, which is facing a decline in manpower replacement from the younger generation. This research attempts to establish a relationship between life satisfaction and visitation of hawker centres, together with the utility gain from visiting hawker centres in monetary terms through usage of the Life Satisfaction Approach, an alternative non-market good valuation method. This is with the objective of providing insights to the Singapore Government in designing policies for the conservancy of hawker centres.
Data was collected from 641 respondents in Singapore and a positive correlation between life satisfaction and visitation of hawker centres was observed. With the coefficients derived from a robust regression, a WTP amount of $326.56 was calculated and may be interpreted as the value placed by an average individual on a single visit to a hawker centre. |
