Summary: | In this dissertation, the author proposes a collaborative design environment to achieve concurrent engineering in design-and-build projects. This collaborative design environment supports: (1) different modes of design interaction in time (synchronous vs asynchronous), and space (collocated vs distributed); and (2) various needs of content sharing and exchange. The use of STEP methodology to store information in a common database, and in a neutral format, is also briefly discussed. The author also describes the use of design consistency manager in databases to automate the detection of design changes and modifications, as contrast to the laborious manual inspection of design drawings. |
