Description
In recent years, there is increasing awareness and concern towards sexual minorities (LGBT), especially towards the homosexuals in the context of Singapore. However, the laws, policies and society as a whole still infringe on the rights and privacy of the gay community. That said, homosexuals are being discriminated against, albeit in different degrees. The clash of various values that are being uphold results in the marginalization of homosexuals, which consequently leads to the control of the body, living spaces and individual freedom by external factors. Yet, there are very little indepth open discussions and dialogues to address these issues. Hence, without a free and open platform to engage the public in meaningful discussions and explorations of the social issues regarding gay rights, it is questionable how these discriminations of homosexuals can be resolved in this dominantly heterosexist society of Singapore. Analysis of credible survey results and reports, as well as gathering personal anecdotes and surveys from respondents was done. Findings were analyzed in an attempt to understand and explain how the tension between the individuals and society at large works. Also, the possibilities of the gay community achieving rights and individual liberty during the negotiation process with the rest of society will be analysed using the concept of Liberty discussed in John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty. Therefore, this thesis hopes to be able to examine if the differences in thoughts and values between the gay community and society can come to a satisfied conclusion, achieving a consensus. This thesis will look into how free discussions can embrace social diversity, as well as exploring how the Singapore gay community can move forward.
