Statistics has shown that there are approximately 22,000 cases of dementia patients aged 65 and above in Singapore [1]. This figure is projected to rise to a total of 53,000 in 2020 and a further increase to 187,000 in 2050 [2]. As such, PEAR – dementia care centre system has been put into development. The project is designed and developed by three main teams – Android Game Development team (AGD), Person-Centred Care team (PCC) and Backend System (BS) team. The BS team comprises of two members – the author and another member (Janice Yak Zhen Qi). Together, the BS team’s project objective is to develop a backend system and a game manager. The backend system shall be used to support the operations of the AGD and PCC team. It comprises of two main components, a database which is used for storage of data and a web interface. The database shall be the primary storage of data pertaining to patients, which shall be used by the AGD team, PCC team and the BS team. Thus, the database must be designed and implemented in a manner that facilitates maintainability and flexibility (the ability of the database design to incorporate new requirements for future development of the project). The web interface shall serve as the primary access points for two main users – Doctors and System administrators. Through the web interface, System administrators shall be able to manage user accounts and games. Additionally, doctors shall be able to keep track of patients’ dementia status and perform actions such as prescription of game categories, generation of game list recommendation and performance analysis of patients’ medication condition based on records of games played by patients. Furthermore, a game manager shall be developed. The game manager shall serve as the integral point between the AGD team and PCC team in uploading the games scores of the games played by patients to the database. Being the pioneer batch to develop the backend system, the BS team set maintainability and flexibility as the main quality attributes. The author strongly believes that the project shall be further developed by future FYP students, improving the ability for dementia care centres to manage the dementia patients within.
