Description
Summary:Several studies have shown that homes without a security system installed are up to 3 times more likely to become a victim of crime, specifically burglary [1]. Without a security system to record the evidence of the crime, these homes become the prime targets of burglars, who seize the opportunity to steal without the risk of being later identified. But owning a security system for your home could be a really expensive investment as not only is the piece of technology itself costly, each extra feature you wish to add would increase the total cost. Most of the security products available in the markets are above $150 USD. Fortunately, due to the recent technological advancements, security system pricing took a plunge but is still however deemed considerably expensive in developing countries. This project aims to develop a security system with features comparable to those available in the market, at a very low-cost, coupled with a front-end application to complete the package. This project will be taking advantage of the emerging mobile operating system, Android, for the application development. Some features include live streaming of the camera, controls for the pan/tilt and also information of all the sensors deployed around the house. These information will be transmitted through the internet with encryption capability. Planning and development will be discussed in details in later chapters. This project was split into two parts, namely the server and the front-end application development team. Despite both sides working on different areas and doing different things, both teams had to work closely together to develop this project. Integration between the server and the application required many hours to rectify issues that arisen. At the end of the project, an Android application and server prototype was completed showing that it is, in fact, possible to develop a security system at a relatively low-cost. This project proved successful in this attempt, however still requires further research and more work to perfect it further.
