Summary: | Diabetic ulcers are chronic wounds that plague the diabetic community responsible for loss of limb and even death in some severe cases. Because of pathological complexities, single drug therapies are ineffective and hence there is a need for drug delivery systems than can deliver multiple pharmaceuticals. This report studies the use of tri-layered microparticles (chitosan/PLGA/PLLA) and dual-layered microparticles (PLGA/PLLA) to deliver three different drugs (DF/EGCG/SS) in sequential and sustained manner. The three drug are shown to segregate into the different layers according to their hydrophilicities. And it was found that tri-layered particles are able to encapsulate a larger drug dose and release them in a sequential manner. The chitosan layer was able to deliver its payload faster than PLGA or PLLA and it functioned like a membrane which slowed drug delivery from the inner layers. |
