Sidestep cut is commonly executed in netball which is mainly participated by females. Poor neuromuscular control during sidestep cut may result in high knee valgus moment (KVM) which can independently rupture the ACL. The Y balance test (YBT) assesses a person’s neuromuscular control and balance when performing dynamic movements to predict risk of lower extremity injury. This study investigates the association between the YBT and KVM during the weight acceptance phase of an unplanned sidestep cut task. It was hypothesized that low YBT scores correlates to greater KVM. 15 Singapore national netballers (Mean ± SD: Age = 24.7 ± 2.4 years, Height = 1.75 ± 0.06 m, Weight = 63.2 ± 7.5 kg) performed randomised and counterbalanced unplanned sidestep cut task followed by the YBT on the lower extremity. Three dimensional motion analyses were performed to obtain the KVM of the netballers. The data was modelled and processed using the UWA lower limb model and marker set. There are significant negative correlations, r = -.592, p = .02 between the left composite scores of the YBT and the peak KVM during the unplanned sidestep cut and also the left posterolateral direction has significant correlation with peak KVM r = -0.608, p = .016. These findings suggest that the YBT could be use as a screening tool to predict non contact ACL injury risk.
