Summary: | Closer is an immersive multidisciplinary light installation that invites viewers to contemplate about love and loss. The installation is separated into three portions — a larger-than-life lantern sculpture, a video installation of cinemagraphs, and a book further explaining the work.
The main piece of the installation is a lantern sculpture that will explore the connection and meaning found between my grandmother and myself. The project allows me to joyfully celebrate the precious time I have left with a family member I love. Part of the lantern is formed by rice papers, of which I carefully burned holes into. My physical process and the resulting visual effect marks the phenomenon of time passing — an inevitable decay — as a poignant, yet beautiful event.
Coupled with cinemagraph videos, the nature of this medium heightens the stillness of a frame and isolates a moment in time where things are meant to be happening.
All these elements will effectively communicate the importance of cherishing to avoid regret, and also hope, which is made possible even in the worst of times. This report will detail my thought processes, research, artist references and execution of Closer. |
