Summary: | Nowadays, smartphones have become more and more popular and useful. As an emerging
technology for smartphones, Mobile Visual Search (MVS), which is a new way of performing
search based on captured images instead of texts, has become more popular as well.
Besides the traditional way of taking pictures, Augmented Reality (AR) is currently attracting
more attention. With AR, users just need to position their phones on the images, then the results
will be retrieved back and displayed automatically. Compared to taking pictures for search, AR
largely increases the efficiency and improves the user experience.
In this project, an Android-based MVS app, which is integrated with AR, has been designed for a
tour book - Lonely Planet Singapore with its pocket version. The app aims to provide various
services for the readers during their reading. The services include adding places to a checklist,
recommendation of popular places, Google Map service and so on.
A testing on the performance of the app was done after the app was completed. The recognition
accuracy is 99.4% with an average response time 490.9ms. As a result, the performance of the
app was acceptable.
In order to bring more conveniences to the users, more various services can be developed and
integrated to the app. Furthermore, besides the domain of tour book, other domains can also be
integrated with MVS technology in the future. |
