Summary:This seven-chapter thesis presents the findings of a research investigating the widespread phenomenon of code-mixing among tertiary students in Singapore. It explores both societal and linguistic factors involved. Given the multilingual nature of the Singapore society, code-mixing is a most natural phenomenon However, code-mixing as a phenomenon typically invites subjective criticisms and value judgments. This study was prompted by the need to examine the issue of code-mixing in depth from a sociolinguistic perspective. It aims to provide further insight by investigating the social, cultural and linguistic implications involved.
