Design of a miniaturized dual-polarized high frequency (HF) antenna

The High Frequency (HF) antenna operates between 3 to 30 Megahertz (MHz) in the electromagnetic spectrum. It has evolved in numerous ways since its very first establishment ranging from its shapes, materials and sizes. Although significant work has been done by engineers to improve the overall physi...

It has evolved in numerous ways since its very first establishment ranging from its shapes, materials and sizes. Although significant work has been done by engineers to improve the overall physical structure, it is still seen large in size when compared to other antennas operating at diverse frequencies. Therefore, this project serves to present a new miniaturized HF antenna which also incorporates dual polarization (vertical and horizontal) properties. Extensive simulations via Computer Simulation Technology (CST) software are conducted in this project to design the miniaturized HF antenna. Several miniaturization techniques were studied which include introducing of slots, capacitive cap with poles and folded structure. The final results obtained revealed that these techniques had the capacity to further improve the antenna’s efficiency and bandwidth. This concludes that the prospective of miniaturizing the HF antenna is conceivable through the utilization of the proposed miniaturization techniques. Moreover it is to note that due to time constraint, the horizontal polarization property is omitted from the final design of the antenna. As such a newly miniaturized vertical polarized HF antenna in the form of conical monopole is to be presented in this report.
