Description
Summary:With the growing world population and the limited space available, many have turned their attention to underground possibilities. Even with the fast developing technologies we possess, underground excavations are still full of challenges. The lack of information and uncertainties of what is beneath subjects Geotechnical Engineers to a difficult task. This project will focus on the excavation in underground rock layer. Deterministic and reliability analysis will be conducted on underground tunneling and excavations. For the deterministic analysis, closed form solutions and computer program Rocscience Phase2 would be used to obtain results. Comparisons between numerical results from closed form solutions and Finite Element theory from Phase2 would also be made. Comparisons of different excavation shapes and their effect would also be discussed. For the reliability analysis, First Order Reliability Method would be used to estimate the probability of failure in each individual case. Detailed process of how the analysis was conducted explained. Possibility of varying the methods would also be discussed in the project.
