Human errors attribute to over 90% of such road accidents, be it fatal or non-fatal. It is natural to want to achieve 0% accident rate on the roads. However, it is not realistic to be able to achieve 0% accident rate as some road accidents are due to mechanical faults in the motor vehicle. Despite continuous reminders to the public, consequences occur once it is too late. In this modern age of technology, smartphones have been brought into this world and majority of the people own at least one. Thus, this project looks into utilizing the advantages of smartphones. Although the usage of mobile devices while driving is considered dangerous, it is not a threat if an app is fully automated, which will not cause any driver to take their eyes off the road. The Driver Assistant System, DAS, takes care of that problem. With the ability to measure vehicles at a distance, it is able to prompt voice alerts to users if they are approaching close proximity to vehicles at the front end or if there are vehicles at the rear end tailgating them. In addition, DAS informs users if they are safe to filter to an adjacent lane as soon as they signal their intentions. Lastly, DAS comes with a builtin GPS for users to utilize, in the event they need to know traffic density or accident locations.
