Summary: | Padeye are usually small round opening that is in an edgewise projection of a plate welded to a particular part of a ship’s structure. There are essential for lifting operations which results in them being put under high stress. Furthermore it is found that the padeye could be lifted at an inclination out of plane angle, which greatly weaken the padeye structure causing structural damages leading to huge losses.
There are many methods to calculate the different stress type experience by the padeye however most of them are time consuming and usually costly. One such method would be to depend on the theoretical calculations. However the result might not be accurate as many external factors are not taken into considerations when depending on the theoretical calculations. An alternative method would be to use widely available Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis software which take into account the different external factors without the need to solve difficult mathematical equations.
The different stress type and location which lead to structural failure are found from experiences and studies. The main aim of this project would be to determine how the out of plane angles has an effect on the padeye. This is done by considering the different stress type experienced by the padeye through the usage of ABAQUS, a FEM engineering software. It is found that with the increase in the out of plane angle, the stress increases with the same amount of loading. With certain stress type increasing more due to the inclination. |
