Description
Summary:This Final Year Project (FYP) presents the work of project number B241, Standard Static Tensile Test for Soft Materials. The Mechanics of Materials Lab of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), N3.2-B2-01 is the venue where the student conducted all the experiments related to this project. The purpose for this report is to give the reader an overview of what this FYP is about. This project is a relatively new project as there are not many researches done on the testing of soft materials like durian shells. Static tensile testing is a common technique used to measure the ultimate tensile strength and the INSTRON machine 5569 will be used to do the testing. The tests are conducted based on the force applied on the specimen, resulting in necking process. The objective of the project is to find out about the tensile properties of durian shell fibres, in general the study of natural fibres, for better usage of soft materials in the near future. In order to achieve that, the student used the studies on the properties of wood to compare with the research results. The project will also look into the causes and solutions to the problems faced during the experiment, as well as the observations made during the experiment. Possible recommendations for the static tensile test will be discussed in order to improve the usage of soft materials.
