Water saving system project 3 : programmable logic circuit unit
With Singapore moving towards a Smart Nation, one innovation on trial is the Smart Home Energy Management System which aims to save energy. It is shown that 29% of water usage in a typical household is used on showering and this number can be reduced using a Smart Water Saving System (WSS). The aim...

It is shown that 29% of water usage in a typical household is used on showering and this number can be reduced using a Smart Water Saving System (WSS). The aim of the project is to create a prototype Smart WSS that can be added to the Smart Home system. This WSS comprises of a total of four main parts. This report documents the Programmable Logic Circuit Unit (PLCU) of the system. The PLCU is the “brain of the system” and is done by using a microcontroller. It includes the temperature selection section, display section and motor section which determines if the water should be driven to storage. Each section provides the decision-making process, hard- and soft-ware connections and problems encountered. The advantages and disadvantages of each decision made is also discussed. Some example of components used are Arduino Mega2560, ChipKIT Uno32, I2C Display and Serial Display. This PLCU is tested with the other three main parts of the system and is proved to function as expected. This prototype WSS has been nominated for NTU Open House 2016 and has successfully exhibited under the School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Final Year Project showcase. This WSS also competed in the Switching to Suitable Solution (SSS) Case Challenge 2016 organized by Earthlink NTU.
