Description
Summary:Over the years, under the pressure of global warming and environmental sustainability, solutions and methods to reduce greenhouse gases has become a growing interest and concern for the society. One of the potential solutions would be to promote the use of Electric Vehicles (EV) as not only it is energy-efficient, no combustion of gasoline would be involved and hence mitigating the effects caused by carbon dioxide emissions. The running of EV involves using electric car motor, which is being controlled by electric motor controller board. As a result, to improve the operation of EV, one can tackle from improving the overall efficiency of the electric motor controller board. In this project, the idea of improving the electric motor controller board is being looked into. The electric car motor being introduced is a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). The PMSM, which requires an alternating current acting as input source, would have to therefore operate with the integration of an inverter, as well as a motor controller board. A prototype controller Printed Circuit Board (PCB) is being built to first familiarize the author with relevant hardware knowledge. Parameters of the PMSM are being measured by using Code Composer Studio (CCS) so as to obtain the necessary values needed for control system implementation. Using the concept of Modularity, a new board consisting of a gate driver and inverter was built using EAGLE to further aid the overall electric motor control system efficiency. For the future work, more research and study on PCB layout could be carried out and implemented on the existing board, so as to further improve the board’s operating efficiency.
