Patterned structure for reduction of noise on printed circuit board

In this study, a method of splitting power plane on printed circuit board (PCB) with the implementation of patterned structure of periodic via array was investigated for noise reduction capability on high frequency noises due to power sources or high speed switching devices. There were several confi...

There were several configurations designed, simulated and analyzed on a PCB using Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Microwave Studio simulation software. All of the simulations are done in the frequency domain with different configurations such as different period of the structure, from 2 to 6 millimeters (mm), and partial implementations of the structure on the PCB. The analysis were done on the S-parameter results from the simulation. Through the analysis of the S-parameter results, the method is compared with the traditional method of splitting all ground and power planes on the PCB based on the noise suppression bandwidth and the noise suppression power. This result can be applied to PCBs used for devices such as Analog to Digital Convertors (ADC) and Digital to Analog Convertors (DAC) for noise suppression. Recommendations are made to improve on the study of the implementation of the patterned structure.
