Description
Summary:Analyse the Overvoltage protection in HVDC transmission line caused by lightning strike in various location and use surge arrester to suppress the overvoltage caused by lightning strike. This project uses the two-terminal VSC-HVDC model to study the overvoltage responses and protection by surge arrester during lightning strike in various locations along the HVDC transmission line. Lightning model 1/50μs at 10kA was used to generate the lightning stroke on the HVDC transmission line and analysed the effects of the lightning impulse at both converter stations. Also installed surge arrester at the transmission towers to control the overvoltage resulting from lightning stroke on the HVDC transmission line. Lightning strike simulation was carried out in various transmission towers, using PSCAD software. The wave forms of lightning strike at various transmission tower were obtained before and after surge arrester installation. The results are shown and the patterns were observed, and recommendations are suggested to conclude this report.
