Description
Summary:This report is a fundamental study of the newly designed Cardioid Compressor, which is a rotary compressor first invented by a previous EURECA student. The design of the compressor will be explained, which consists of the main parts and their geometry, the working cycle of the fluid from when it enters the compressor via the suction duct and exits via the discharge duct. Literature of existing compressor designs will be discussed, and the advantages of the Cardioid Compressor over other designs will be shown. Then, a mathematical model for the compressor will be formulated for the areas of volume, thermodynamics, suction and discharge, dynamics and kinematics. Equations will be derived and explained for these models during their discussion. Simulations based on these equations will be ran using the MatLab program, and basic simulation results will be presented, including the volume, pressure, temperature, mass flow rate, frictional losses and power losses. A parametric study that studies the effect of changes in geometry and operational speed will have on the mechanical efficiency of the compressor will be included. Finally, the report ends with the conclusion and recommendations for potential future work based on the Cardioid Compressor.
