Qiaoxiang identity from the perspective of Chinese business network : a case study on Indonesian Chinese Entrepreneur Liem Sioe Liong

“Huaqiao”,-originally refers to the Chinese nationals who are sojourning overseas. Though the image of this migrant community has undergone variation over time, their connections with the ancestral hometown, also known as “qiaoxiang(侨乡)” remains relatively constant. Through remittance, donation and investment, overseas Chinese play an important role in the economic-social growth of qiaoxiang. Especially after the economic reform and reopening of the Chinese mainland, those towns and villages in South China have used their connections with overseas Chinese to develop their unique economic model. In view of the limitation of the Sino-centric approach in the past academic studies, this thesis proposes a wider perspective-“Chinese Business Network” which spatially covers qiaoxiang, residing countries and relevant areas. It aims to discuss the identity of overseas Chinese as the subject of economic activities. This case study is focused on Indonesian Chinese entrepreneur Liem Sioe Liong. By the end of 20th century, he took a leadership role and was deeply involved in the modernization and industrialisation of his hometown Futsing. During the course, Liem has cultivated his qiaoxiang ties and has strengthened his sense of belonging to qiaoxiang. From the author’s observation, social capital is the core of Liem’s business network, which not only helped to expand his businesses in his residing country but also exerted significant influence on his investment and other economic activities in his qiaoxiang. |
