sg-ntu-dr.10356-690922020-11-13T04:39:18Z Topologically reduced multilevel power converters for alternative energy sources Lim, Ziyou Ali Iftekhar Maswood Interdisciplinary Graduate School (IGS) Energy Research Institute @ NTU DRNTU::Engineering::Electrical and electronic engineering::Power electronics 299 p. The ever increasing demand of energy and the evidence of global warming have forced many nations to divert renewable and clean energy sources into the mainstream for power generation. In order to keep up with the pace of achieving such high power conversion, multilevel converters have become the recent trends for implementation in these applications. With the multilevel approach, better power quality can be achieved more efficiently by synthesizing higher number of output voltage levels. Many research works on multilevel topologies are proposed constantly, but are still not available commercially. Therefore, the research study investigates both advantages and disadvantages of the classical and the recent multilevel converters used in the industrial environment. By doing so, the investigative study aims to provide a better understanding of the gap difference between the research conducted and the current industrial needs. Hence, more industry based constructive research works are carried out based on the industry demands in terms of power density, space constraint, development costs, etc. As such, and more specifically, new multilevel topologically reduced power electronic converters have been proposed together with the power quality control schemes, which are experimented dynamically as well to prove the feasibility of the conceptual designs.
