Description
Summary:The functionalities of UAVs are expanding more so than ever. From surveillance, photography, traffic control to search and rescue. Reliability and possibilities for expansion are vital to keep improving the performance of UAVs. Currently, most UAVs use different links for data payloads and flight control. When this is made into a single link, it can be more robust and reduce the resources that need to be mounted on the UAV. In this project, a wireless link was developed for the transmission of data (flight controls, video telemetry and radar data). Hardware and software development and integration played a crucial part in realising the communication link. Video telemetry with a resolution of 720x480p was transmitted from the UAV to the GBS, whilst the GBS sent out data in the opposite direction. PWM modulated signals that were sent from the GBS to UAV were also tested. The modular on-board system was developed to be capable of data transmission with various different configurations as discussed in the report. Moreover, the quality of the data link and range of flight was tested and investigated for future improvements to be incorporated. Lastly, discussions and possible improvements were included for future enhancements of the communications link.
