The phenomenon of female same-sex love and the discourses of anti-homosexual in Republican China : a case study of Lin Loon magazines (1930-1949)

Description
This paper aims to analyze the phenomenon of female same-sex love and the discourses of anti-homosexual represented by Ling Loon Magazines and other magazines during Republican China, specifically from the years 1930 to 1949. This research mainly explores articles on Ling Loon Magazines because it was one of the Shanghai popular magazines during the period. By analyzing the stories of same-sex love in society and the “friendship” of students in all-girl school which represented by the magazines, we can learn that the society of Republican China mainly adopted the discourse of anti-homosexual after 1930s. Many people during that time perceived homosexuality as sexual perversion. Although the prevalence of same-sex love in all-girl school was widely acceptable by most people, their relationships were merely considered as a rehearsal for heterosexual relationship and it was believed that most of them would automatically transform into heterosexual after graduation. Taking interest in the formation of anti-homosexual discourse, this paper will discuss and investigate how intellectuals and public shaped anti-homosexual discourse. Lastly, this paper will identify the interactions between women’s liberation discourses and anti-homosexual discourses.
