Summary:The idea of developing the creative arts sector in Singapore was first politically introduced in the late 1980s, after which the ambition continued to grow throughout the 1990s to the 2010s. However, it is a general observation that the long years of governmental efforts have yet to produce a local arts scene that embodies vibrancy and joie de vivre. Even though significant progress have been made in developing cultural social policies for the creative arts sector, the state still obscures the autonomous development of the arts scene. Using the works of Cornelius Castoriadis, a contemporary political philosopher, this paper intended to draw on his ontology of creation to shed understanding on the (1) relationship between Being, the society and the arts, (2) on the observation posed above and (3) explore a direction for the Singapore creative arts scene to works to.
