| Summary: | This is a microhistorical study of a Nine Emperor Gods temple that used to be situated at the heart of a tight-knit Teochew village or kampong in Singapore. After Singapore’s independence, the Urban Renewal Program was enacted as swathes of land were compulsorily acquired by the government in order to drive the modernization of the young city-state; as the temple’s kampong was slated for redevelopment, the temple was faced with the potential loss of its entire devotee base as residents of the kampong relocated to new public housing estates, whereas the temple itself had to search for a new home. Through the kampong’s worship of the Nine Emperor Gods from past till present, the dynamics of the interplay between religion, community and identity within the kampong is revealed, and the measures that the temple enacted to preserve such a relationship and thrive amidst such trying circumstances will be examined. |
