Description
Summary:This dissertation will be an exploration of the history of Singapore’s agricultural industry from 1970-2000. From almost disappearing in the 1970s due to pressures brought about by development in the 1960s, the industry made a comeback in the 1980s and underwent a phase of modernization. This remarkable transformation has been assessed mostly from the view of the state and there have not been many attempts made to evaluate the role of the farmers in this transformation. This paper will be an attempt to present a more holistic picture of the modernization of the agricultural industry and show how the farmers along with the state interacted to transform the agricultural industry.
