Description
Summary:Manual computation of tolerance charts and process planning requires highly skilled and experienced individual. They are both tedious and time consuming. This dissertation presents an efficient method of determining the working dimensions and their balanced tolerances using a modified process dimension tree. The graphical representation of the operations makes the process routing and operation listing less laborious and easier to visualize. The process dimension tree allows the use of simple computation techniques which can be solved using any linear equation solver program. Further, it provides critical information on the processes which would contribute· the most to the manufacturing cost and propose solutions to yield maximum reduction in cost or in contrast, the best quality product. The system is elaborated by using several examples to show the industrial application and relevance while comparing the results to their respective conventional tolerance charting procedure as well as other existing charting techniques. Using this system a designer is able to determine the dimensions and tolerances that are to be produced at each stage during the manufacture of a component. The feasibility of the blueprint drawings for manufacture can also be tested.
