Summary: | Any medium that confines and transmits electromagnetic energy from one point to
another can be defined as a transmission line. Transmission lines are the fundamental
elements of the microwave circuits and can also be used together with other passive
devices. The evolution of the transmission lines and their associated technologies has
been going on for more than I 00 years. The semi-insulating III-V compound
semiconductor substrates are the most popular substrates for the current microwave
applications, due to the high power and high cutoff frequency of Ill-V active devices
made on them, as well as the low substrate loss for the passive components. A brief
history oftransmission lines is introduced at the beginning ofthis chapter. The literature
of the advanced transmission line techniques for Si-based microwave applications is
reviewed in the latter part of this chapter. The organization of the thesis is summarized
at the last part of this chapter. |
