Summary: | Using qualitative interviews, this study seeks to explore how youths manage their
relationships and interactions with their extended kin. In particular, the study utilizes the
intergenerational solidarity-conflict paradigm and the concept of ambivalence to examine a)
the roles of extended kin, b) the interactions between youths and their extended kin, c) the
dilemmas that youths experience, and d) how youths negotiate their extended kin
relationships. Even though youths may face structural constraints and restrictions, ultimately,
the findings reveal that youths do possess agency in negotiating their relationships and
interactions as they recognize the importance of maintaining positive relations with their
extended kin. |
