| Summary: | This paper aims to uncover how gender ideology influences the lived experiences and perceptions of singlehood among men and women in the modern Asian city-state of Singapore. Besides exploring the general attitudes and aspirations towards marriage among singles, this paper aims to expand on the theory of singlehood as a state of temporality among women. It argues that single men are also caught in this liminal position with discomforts. However, singlehood becomes a permanent state for older women, much quicker than it does for men, depicting how unequal marriage cut-off dates continue to persist. Finally, this paper presents how economic and educational factors add further dimensions to the gendered experience of singlehood. |
