Singaporean elderly social networks: Exploring how formal and informal social networks enable successful ageing

This paper aims to study how Singaporean elderly build/maintain formal and informal social networks, as well as determining the effectiveness of various networks in providing opportunities for the elderly to socialise and acquire social support. Data was obtained by conducting semi-structured interviews and administering the Lubbens Social Network 6-Point Scale on a diverse group of 15 seniors. Results showed that majority of the elderly maintain their network, instead of building it. Formal networks are found to be effective in aiding the elderly who do not have substantial familial and informal ties. Finally, relevant solutions that may enable the elderly to age successfully are suggested.
