Semi-structured interviews with respondents from each of the three dominant ethnicities (Chinese, Malays, Indians) in Singapore were conducted. The study managed to uncover that children are indeed disciplined according to their gender - delineated through harsher discipline for boys and a lower tolerance of transgressions for girls, following ideals of gender essentialism. Further, ethnic differences were derived from Malay and Chinese mothers in how these differentiated discipline were expressed.
