Effects of exergaming on physiologic and metabolic responses in healthy adults : a systematic review

Background: Physical inactivity is a modifiable lifestyle risk factor for non-communicable diseases and yet only about 70% of Singaporeans meet recommended physical activity (PA) guidelines (Win et al., 2015). Novel alternatives to traditional PA, such as exergaming, have rapidly developed in the pa...

Novel alternatives to traditional PA, such as exergaming, have rapidly developed in the past decade and have been reported to meet PA guidelines. Could they be a solution to physical inactivity? Objective: To systematically review current evidence on the effects of exergaming on physiologic and metabolic responses in healthy adults. Data Sources: Relevant studies were searched from PubMed, SPORTDiscus, SciVerse Scopus and IEEE Xplore Digital Library for journal articles published between February 2007 to February 2017. Results: Eleven studies (n=437) were included and all provided evidence on heart rate, energy expenditure, metabolic equivalent and oxygen consumption. Conclusion: Commercially available exergames can elicit moderate-intensity exertion and meet recommended PA guidelines for adults. Keywords: exergaming, active video games, energy expenditure, systematic review Bachelor of Science (Sport Science and Management) 2017-04-12T03:39:11Z 2017-04-12T03:39:11Z 2017 Final Year Project (FYP) http://hdl.handle.net/10356/70137 en 56 p. application/pdf
