It is used widely for all sorts of application ranging from our mobile services to even the television channels that we watched every day. Wireless communication is achieved by using spectrum space to transmit the data wirelessly and spectrum space is a limited resources. The utilization of spectrum space had become a very important study due to the drastic increase in wireless services. Researches and experiments had been conducted over the years to find the solution to utilize the spectrum space. Spectrum sensing in cognitive radio is one of the solutions to improve the utilization of spectrum space. The goals of this project are to implement an energy detector in a cognitive radio and study the effects of the energy detector on real time spectrum sensing. Modifications will be made to the energy detector to display and indicate whether a spectrum is occupied. This report will educate the importance of spectrum space, how spectrum sensing techniques can be used to improve the spectrum utilization and explain the advantages and limits of an energy detector.
