A study has shown that providing individualized care helps to improve the lives of patients with dementia and care providers. Providing such care requires a great amount of information of the patient. Therefore, a backend system was developed by a group of student researchers to provide the care providers with a centralized platform to better manage the dementia patients. The aim of this project is to improve the inherited backend system (version 1) making it more extensible and comprehensive (version 2). The backend system is made up of two components, a database and a web interface which shall be improved and further developed. The database is an essential component that provides a storage facility for the three teams of the PEAR system – Person-Centred Care (PCC) team, Android Game Development (AGD) team, and Backend System team. It is redesigned to support new functions from the respective teams, to allow data accuracy to be preserved, and to facilitate the future expansion of the PEAR system. The web interface is an access point which provides functionalities for the care providers to manage and analyze the patient’s condition. In this project, an automated patient schedule generator, new functions, and an approval tracking system were implemented. The automated patient schedule generator will generate a personalized schedule that is suited for each patient based on their preferences and the doctor’s recommendation. Export patient schedule is a new function that comes with the schedule generator to transform the raw data of patient schedule into a timetable representation. With the approval tracking system implemented, the entire PEAR system will be able to track changes made to the information in the database as well as changes that require approval. Activity log is another new function which allows the system administrator to oversee all changes of the patient-related data. With the improved backend system (version 2), the care providers will be able to expedite the daily operation processes and deliver a higher quality care to the patients.
