Description
Summary:This paper explores the preference of social network support for Chinese Singaporean Elderly using Task Specificity Model, Convoy Approach, Social Exchange Approach and Individual Choice Approach. Drawing on 18 semi-structured, in-depth interviews, findings demonstrated that family is the most preferred informal social network to help Singaporeans achieve successful ageing, while neighbours are the least preferred form of support. Family members have high obligation of reciprocity for care giving and thus are more reliable in providing support. While the close proximity of neighbours are helpful in emergency situations, the lack of interaction and trust reduces the preference for neighbours. Preference for extended family support is slightly higher than seeking help from friends due to long-term commitment and higher trust levels.
