description |
This final year project focuses on tackling the issue of aging population in Singapore, by
tapping on the widely available technology of today, Internet of Things (IoT). This is made
possible due to the rapid and affordable advancement of Technology, making smart devices,
which may be of a size of a card yet be computationally powerful enough to function as a
computer. As such, the concept of IoT is being made viable, allowing us to explore different
avenues to tackle and alleviate issues a country such as Singapore might encounter due to
aging population.
The objective of this project is to create a smart home system which allows for an
unobtrusive and non-invasive monitoring system of the elderly’s well-being in their own home
using motion sensors. Intelligent learning will be done through data gathered by sensors to
learn and understand behaviors of elderlies throughout the day. This information will be
presented to family members in a user-friendly manner, to make better informed decisions
with regards to ensuring the elderlies’ safety and well-being, or alerts sent when the system
detects anomalies.
The implementation will involve the use of Passive Infrared (PIR) Sensors, connected to
a Raspberry Pi (RPi 3), connected to a server for storage and processing, with activities and
alerts displayed or sent to a mobile application developed for this purpose.
As future work, a more robust intelligent learning could be used to give more accurate
predictions, a more sophisticated application could be developed and more complex sensors
could be utilized to analyze any accident which requires caregivers’ intervention. |
