Summary: | Energy storage plays a vital role in the modern global economy. This research paper presents a comparative analysis by concluding the best choice of hybrid energy storage system (HESS) for ferries and cruise ships. The HESS consists of more than one type of individual energy storage parts. In this research work, various literature reviews are being compared and analysed. The best combination of HESS is proposed to Rolls-Royce.
This dissertation mainly focuses on the following aspects.
• Different types of energy storage system (ESS) available is discussed and how they can be used in HESS for ships.
• Rolls-Royce’s ferry and coastal vessel load profiles used in this research is reviewed and the optimal combination is proposed.
• Future batteries are considered for further future research.
• Finally, it is concluded that the Lithium-Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery is the best candidate for the ferry. Combination of Ultracapacitor (UC) and Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC) battery is also proposed to Rolls-Royce for the coastal vessel. UC is chosen along with NMC battery for the HESS to function well in both short and long term applications. |
