The impacts of new shipping routes/passages : a study on impacts of the arctic route on various shipping sectors

Rapid melting of ice caps in the Arctic had opened up alternative routes (the NSR and the NWP) to shipping industry. Past studies suggested that the more popular route, the NSR could potentially reduce the travelling distance by up to 40%. The objective of this paper is to study and compare the feas...

Past studies suggested that the more popular route, the NSR could potentially reduce the travelling distance by up to 40%. The objective of this paper is to study and compare the feasibility, relevance and impact of the Arctic route against the traditional route (Suez Canal and Panama Canal). This study was completed based on past studies, recent transit data in the Arctic, survey and interview. Tramp shipping (both dry and liquid bulk) seems to be able to take advantage of the shorter Arctic route, whereas liner shipping (container) is not able to capitalize on this shorter route. This study may be useful for relevant parties who wish to extend their shipping operations to the Arctic.
