Diseases like obesity, diabetes and hypertension are common among Singaporeans aged 18 to 69 years old. Vitamin D deficiency and cases of malnutrition among the poor and aged are also serious concerns for Singapore. Meanwhile, the government’s initiatives to promote healthy eating keep on coming, as we work towards a healthy Singapore by 2020, following a Healthy Living Master Plan Taskforce proposed in September 2012. Everybody knows the importance of eating right to stay healthy. However, not many know how much is just about right. Counting nutritional requirements is not straightforward, given that everyone has their own unique body. Consequently, people often neglect the thoughts of tracking their food consumption and eat solely based on their means or what they desire. This project introduces an Android application, NUTRIADD+, which is a tool to simplify the concept of nutrition to Singaporeans. The application will educate them on the different types of nutrition, help to calculate their nutritional needs, provide nutritional information of the food they eat, and notify of any nutrients that they are lacking or have over-consumed. This allows users to be more informed of their food choices and guide them towards eating right. This application involves the integration of Nutritionix API that provides real time access to nutritional facts of grocery items and common meals. Firebase Console is chosen as a back-end database support for user authentication, real-time database and data storage.
