Summary:Power system stability has been one of the utmost importance in power engineering. Power system stability is the ability to recover the operation of the system to steady state condition in the shortest time possible. There are 3 types of stabilities depending on the nature of disturbances namely steady state stability, transient stability and dynamic stability. This report will mainly focus on the transient stability. Transient stability is one of the way which will help in stabilising the system and maintain the expected power delivery. It deals with the ability of the system to retain synchronism following disturbances such as removal of load, line faults, and many more. Transient stability of the system is the power flow after a sustained period of disturbance whereby it does not go beyond the maximum power permissible to flow through the network without the loss of stability. The system is said to be unstable when the power is beyond the maximum permissible value. Simulations have been widely developed which allows work done easier and drastically improve in performance. Without simulation, many testing and collection of data have to be done physically on hardware which is not only time consuming but also high in cost in running the actual system. This report will cover the transient stability studies during different conditions of load disturbances and comparing the transient stability results simulated by the Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) known as OPAL-RT RTDS and on the Clean Energy Research Laboratory (CERL) Microgrid Testbed. In addition, PowerWorld Simulator will also be used as a comparison for the studies. The operations of the different platforms used was also described in this report so that the knowledge gained can be passed on.
