總結:The increasing threats to water resources has highlighted the potential of wastewater reclamation processes to supplement both domestic and industrial demands. Conventional wastewater treatments, which have traditionally involved the use of activated sludge process, are limited by the large tank volume and the limit in separating suspended solids. As such, membrane bioreactors are increasingly employed in wastewater treatments due to their smaller footprint and better permeate quality. Due to the high permeate quality, it is also possible to utilize membrane bioreactor permeates as feed into reverse osmosis treatment units to produce pure water of high quality which can then be reclaimed for industrial, as well as direct and indirect domestic uses. This study will integrate the use of a novel nanofiltration membrane to improve the membrane bioreactor process for the production of higher quantity and quality of permeate to achieve better reverse osmosis feed water. Performance comparison against widely available commercial membranes was also carried out. Optimization of the operating conditions of the nanofiltration membrane bioreactor will also be studied to prolong the sustainability of the membrane bioreactor. Finally, this study aims to guide and inform future research on the feasibility of nanofiltration membrane bioreactor processes for quicker industrialisation of this technology.
