Huge machines with its complex designs require one or more operators to be in or around the machines to handle the controls. Since these operators require to be in the vicinity of the machines, this put them in direct danger from the machines if the operators do not have the capabilities and proper knowledge to operate the machines. This study will look into the automation of these heavy construction machinery and allow the operators to handle these machines from a safe distance. The drilling rig used for this study will be researched and breakdown to its various components. The degrees of freedoms and its restrictions will be explained. The necessary sensory equipment will also be touch upon and introduce to the drilling rig. The simulation study will then be shown to detail how the sensory equipment can be implemented into the drilling rig and automate it. The conclusion of the report will showcase the required process to follow in automating the drilling rig and the difficulties faced in the simulation study of the drilling process.
