The inverse and normal poynting effect in soft gels

The experimental results of soft homogenous cylindrical gels under pure torsion, pure axial and a combined loading of both torsion and axial loading are studied. In the context of this project, the Poynting effect is described as the tendency for the cylinder to elongate or contract in axial directi...

In the context of this project, the Poynting effect is described as the tendency for the cylinder to elongate or contract in axial direction when torsion is applied. In the context of this paper, the inverse Poynting effect is described as the axial force-twist effect. This effect investigates on whether an axial loading can contribute to the twist of the cylinder, when that cylinder is already in torsion. The project focuses on the experimental aspects of the cylinder under pure torsion, pure axial loading and combined torsion-axial loading. The direct and inverse Poynting effects and the significance of these effects are focused on in this paper. The possible future applications of soft gels are also delved into.
