Description
Summary:The Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) has contributed greatly in the power industry as scientists and engineers looked towards renewable energy sources. The HESS will play a bigger role in the future of microgrids as more consumers switched to renewable energy sources. This alternative source to coal and oil will help reduce the global carbon footprints. However, the use of renewable energy sources can cause intermittent power interruptions as environmental changes are often unpredictable. Thus this can affect the reliability of the power system. The HESS then provides a solution to this limitation as it enhances the overall reliability, efficiency and safety of the power system. The influence and impact of the HESS can be determined by designing models to simulate the operations of the HESS under any operating conditions. The photovoltaic model together with the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm can simulate a solar power system. The generated PV power is dependent on the irradiance and temperature set by the system. The PV power will be delivered to the load where any excess or lack of power will be supported by the HESS. The HESS assists the PV system in charging and discharging power to the load to ensure sufficient power is needed from the output. The simulations in this project will display the charging and discharging operations of the HESS as well as its response to sudden changes in irradiance and temperature within the system. The system will utilise power converters to provide power conversion that is necessary for the power system to function properly. The entire system from renewable energy source, HESS, control systems and power converters will be integrated into one system where individual models will function inter dependent of one another. This way, the system model can provide a more accurate simulation results which depicts an actual practical power system. With this, the HESS can function together with other systems to determine the effects it has for a future microgrid.
